New Braunfels is a famous German town in the Texas Hill Country for its outdoor recreation, shopping, and historic district. However, many flock to New Braunfels in the fall for Wurstfest, a German festival featuring beer, live music, carnival rides, and sausage. Don’t miss this German party that has grown to be one of the best German festivals in the state. As the festival has flourished over time, it has rightfully earned its place as a premier Texan celebration of German culture in the United States.

The first Wurstfest began in 1961 and drew a crowd of about 2,000. Wurstfest grew from a one-day event to now a 10-day festival. This festival attracts more than 100,000 visitors to celebrate all things German and Bavarian. Many festival-goers even dress up in lederhosen and alpine hats to truly get into this Western European country culture. As the crowds grow, the celebrations get brighter and louder, with the lights and music resounding through the little Southwestern town.

Attendees of Wurstfest can expect a wide variety of sausages and beers. Beers range from local Texas beers to German beers to popular domestic beers. Don’t forget to pair your brew with a German sausage. Wurstfest used to be referred to as “the sausage festival” and is still widely known as the “Ten-Day Salute to Sausage.” From a great bratwurst to a sausage sampler on a stick, sausage remains a big part of Wurstfest.

After expanding the fairgrounds in 2014, Wurstfest now hosts five stages of live music. Musical acts vary but predominately focus on German bands and yodelers that play polka or waltz music. After a few beers, you’ll learn how to dance the polka in no time.

Located near the headwaters of the Comal River, Wurstfest is genuinely the best fall festival in the town of New Braunfels. Enjoy German beer, sausage, and music at this unique festival, one of the best Oktoberfests in the Lone Star State.
