Cave of the Winds has been a point of curiosity for centuries, starting with the Jicarilla Apache Indians who believed that a great spirit resided in the cave. However, in 1880, the cave was discovered by brothers John and George Pickett, who found that the cave had larger chambers deep within. After this discovery, Cave of the Winds was excavated and made structurally sound for visitors. Then in February 1881, the cave was opened to the public and has been operating as a tourist attraction ever since.
For visitors hoping to explore the cave, Cave of the Winds offers three different cave tours, the Discovery Tour, the Lantern Tour and Caving 101. The discovery tour, perfect for families, is a walking tour that lasts 45 minutes. On this tour, visitors wind through the cave’s inner workings and learn all about this geological marvel. If you’re hoping to hear more about the folklore and history of the cave, then take the Lantern Tour, where guests carry hand-held lanterns. Now for a more adventurous experience, you’ll want to take Caving 101, where you’ll get down and dirty during this two-hour adventure.
Cave tours aren’t the other fun opportunities found at Cave of the Winds. Experience thrills on the Bat-A-Pult, Winder Walker Challenge Course, and Terror-dactyl ride. Catch gorgeous views and speeds up to 40 miles per hour on the Bat-A-Pult ride that soars high across Williams Canyon.
