9 Best Things to Do During Winter in Georgia

While much of the state of Georgia doesn’t see snow during the milder winters, there are unique things to do that differ from the typical. Don’t get us wrong, Georgia is unpredictable and can max out at 70 degrees one day, then experience an ice storm the next—this just keeps things interesting. So if you’re thinking of visiting during the winter, it’s actually a fantastic time. Just come prepared with a varying wardrobe that can be layered, and you’ll be set to enjoy these top winter activities!

Go Ice Skating

Go Ice Skating

Various locations all over offer ice skating, with Atlantic Station likely being the best because the rink is surrounded by shops, restaurants and snack carts. We also love the rink that pops up in Olde Town Conyers, an often overlooked nook southeast of Atlanta. Historic buildings and great eateries create an excellent environment for some old-fashioned ice treading.

Visit Cloudland Canyon State Park

Visit Cloudland Canyon State Park

Located at the Northwest tip of Georgia, neighboring Lookout Mountain, Cloudland Canyon State Park is a striking stretch of deep valleys, trees, caves and wildlife habitat. What makes this place even more special during the colder months are the falls that partially crystallize into glistening works of art. Trickles of water spew from beneath the stunning ice cascades, and it truly is a sight to behold. Cloudland is a beyond breathtaking haven to see year-round, but the winter stands out.

Enjoy Hot Beverages and Dessert at Cafe Intermezzo

Cafe Intermezzo has a few locations in Atlanta, from the heart of the city to the airport. The ambiance is calming and oh-so cozy, so it’s the perfect place to warm up on a chilly day. An extensive list of European coffees and a case full of tempting, indulgent cakes are especially tasty during the winter—it’s completely dreamy.

Cozy Up in a Cabin

Cozy Up in a Cabin

Blue Ridge, Dahlonega, Blairsville, you name it—all these Mountain destinations have rentable log cabins nestled in the woods. Many are equipped with fireplaces and hot tubs. There couldn’t be a better way to get your hibernation on. Consider booking close to a cool town, in case you grow tired of the seclusion.

Explore Ponce City Market

Some portions of Ponce City Market, like the rooftop play area, are outdoors. However, loads of restaurants and shops reside inside the history-rich building, so you can taste artisan dishes without facing the nippy air. Try some of the best beef jerky on earth at Bitlong, or indulge in safe-to-eat raw cookie dough!

Visit Savannah

Savannah can be quite crowded all year, but the spring, summer and fall definitely draw the most people. Still offering a comfortable climate, winter is a fantastic time to visit, thanks to lighter traffic, Holiday Trolley Tours to the Gingerbread Village and other fun festivities. The food scene is also supreme.

Hang Out at Lenox Square Lenox Square

Hang Out at Lenox Square

Extensive in comparison to other malls, Lenox not only features our favorite stores like Williams Sonoma and Macy’s, but they have a French Macaron cart, Godiva Shop and Sugarfina! So yeah, this is basically an awesome food venue. While they have some killer mall Chinese grub (you have to try the Mango Chicken), some artisan establishments have taken root, like Cousins Maine Lobster serving up juicy lobster rolls and other New England fare, while Dapper Donuts is a quaint little sweets kiosk. If you’re in the mood for Asian sweets, tacos, organic fare, or cheddar caramel corn, they have that, too.

Go Hiking

Georgia’s various trails take on a much different look in the winter, and with little icy precipitation, they are pretty easy to traverse this time of year. The iconic Appalachian Trail begins here, and although you may not want to follow it all the way to Maine, navigating at least part of it is an accomplishment. Northern areas are loaded with great hiking opportunities, but so are areas a little more south. Dauset Trails near Jackson and Arabia Mountain in Lithonia both have extensive nature walks.

Dine on Authentic Southern Cuisine Home Grown

Dine on Authentic Southern Cuisine

Home Grown’s simplistic digs and killer chicken biscuits dominate the Atlanta food scene. The Smith House in Dahlonega is legendary for its fried chicken, creamed corn, beans, potatoes, and warm cinnamon rolls. It’s not too hard to find a true southern meal in Georgia, and there’s nothing quite like a hot, home-cooked meal on a chilly day.
