This Iconic Theatre in Tampa Is One of the Best in the World

Named “One of the Most Spectacular Theatres in the World” by CNN, the Tampa Theatre is one of Florida’s most fascinating cultural attractions. Built in 1926 as one of America’s most elaborate movie palaces, this iconic landmark now hosts a full calendar of over 600 events each year, from contemporary films to classic movies, concerts, film festivals and sing-a-long shows.

This restored vintage movie theatre showcases classic architecture and original furnishings, where you’ll be mesmerized by the dazzling night-sky ceiling with 99 bulbs to resemble twinkling stars. Its plush red draperies and gold inlaid facades only add to its majestic ambiance, bringing you back to the glitz and glam of the 20s and charm of its yesteryear.

Designed by famed architect John Eberson, the Tampa Theatre was designed as an “atmospheric theatre”. This theatre is particularly special, as it’s said that there isn’t another theatre in the world that showcases so many of its original trappings.

An array of beautiful Renaissance statues adorn the theatre, as this Florida-Mediterranean building is an architectural masterpiece that includes touches of Italian Renaissance, Byzantine, Spanish, Greek Revival, Baroque and English Tudor. A highlight of the theatre is the 900-pipe Wurlitzer organ, while its Mediterranean-esque courtyard features a romantic collection of flowers and gargoyles.

The theatre was wildly popular when it opened in 1926, and for 10 cents moviegoers could enjoy first-class entertainment and be treated to uniformed ushers and attendants. As a bonus, it was the first commercial building in Tampa to offer air-conditioning, an alluring amenity during Florida’s hot summer months. Considered the jewel of Tampa’s cultural landscape, visitors came week after week for the captivating two-hour shows.

The popularity of television rose in the 60’s and had a damaging effect on the theatre, but Tampa’s locals rallied and saved this iconic piece of history. An important landmark for Florida, it was named to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
