Although Jacob’s Well has grown in popularity in recent years, it has always drawn locals and visitors for hundreds of years. The unique geology of the place is due to limestone rock being eroded by an underground water system fed by the Trinity Aquifer. This underwater cave is the second largest in Texas and has a vertical depth of 30 feet. However Jacob’s Well goes even deeper, as the cave continues further through silted chambers and narrow slits, eventually reaching an average depth of 120 feet.
Jacob’s Well is located in Jacob’s Well Natural Area. The submerged cave may be the 81-acre park’s main attraction, however visitors also hike and picnic here too. If you’re hoping to swim in Jacob’s Well, the area is typically only open for swimming during the summer months. The water stays at 68 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a perfect way to cool down during a hot Texas summer. Simply swim in the shallow waters near the cave’s opening, or adrenaline-junkies may choose to jump right into the cave from a rocky outcropping.
