For those seeking historic character, a location surrounded by water and mountains less than an hour from the park, and perhaps some ghost hunting, this 1890s mansion-turned-hotel may be ideal. Manresa Castle once belonged to Port Townsend’s Mayor Charles Eisenbeis and his wife. It went through a number of incarnations in between, including being a popular retreat for nuns followed by a Jesuit priest college in the 1920s. The Victorian, turreted building has been a hotel since 1968 and is well-known by the locals to be haunted by two separate ghosts, a monk who reportedly hung himself in the attic, and a former guest who committed suicide after learning her beloved would never return from the war. Rooms have period charms, some with four-poster beds and water views, along with modern amenities.
