Hamilton Pool was created thousands of years of ago when the dome of an underground river collapsed due to water erosion. It wasn’t until 1990 when Hamilton Pool Preserve was designated as a nature preserve by the Travis County Commissioner’s Court. Now this preserve, which spans 232 acres, is also a great place to hike and bird watch.

Since Hamilton Pool is both a beautiful and sensitive area, it isn’t always open for swimming. Therefore make sure to always call ahead to the preserve to check swimming conditions. If you happen to show up on a day where swimming is prohibited, you can still view Hamilton Pool, its waterfall and the unique wildlife that call this area home. Since reaching Hamilton Pool requires a short hike, always remember to bring sturdy shoes no matter what your plans at the preserve are.
