The games are held annually on the third weekend in January at Central Winds Park in Winter Springs, Fla. The event is hosted by the Scottish-American Society of Central Florida and there’s plenty of pageantry and festivities to be found, including athletic challenges, authentic food, and traditional music and dance.
Brave lads and lassies can test their strength and endurance in the athletics competition, which features seven events including the caber toss, hammer throw and stone put challenges. Other popular events include axe throwing, archery, and the Boulder Boogie contest, where stout Scotsmen and women see who can haul the heaviest rocks the farthest.
When you’re not testing feats of strength, indulge in whiskey tasting or satisfy their sweet tooth at the Scottish shortbread and scones competition. There’s plenty of piping and drumming to be heard, and the Highland dance competition runs throughout the two-day event. You’ll also have the chance to see award-winning sheepdogs in action during the Border Collie and sheep herding demonstrations.
And while the festival may have you feeling like a true Scot for the day, you can dig a little deeper and explore your heritage by discovering your Scottish roots. The festival has staff on hand to help you find your clan, what areas of Scotland they inhabited, and even see what your tartan looks like.
You don’t have to travel all the way to Scotland to experience an authentic Highland festival. Tickets for the Central Florida Scottish Highland Games are available beginning December 1 online and at the gate on the day of the games. Don’t forget to wear your kilt!
