The McNay was the first modern art museum in Texas. The museum hosts over 22,000 works that include Medical and Renaissance Art, a revered collection of prints and drawings, the Jeanne and Irving Mathews Collection of Art Glass, and the Tobin Collection of Theatre Arts.
Located in the downtown Dallas Arts District, owned by Ray and Patsy Nasher, the Nasher Sculpture Center is known as one of the finest private modern sculpture collections in the world.
While you’re in Dallas, you don’t want to skip a visit to the Meadows Museum. Here you can find what is arguably one of the greatest collections of Spanish masters outside of Spain. See works by Velázquez, Goya, Ribera, Murillo, and Zurbarán, to name a few.
The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is the oldest art museum in Texas. It’s the country’s second-largest museum dedicated to contemporary and modern art. Their mission is “collecting, presenting and interpreting international developments in post-World War II art in all media.”
You can find the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston’s remarkable Museum District. It boasts an impressive assortment of Impressionist and Baroque art. It is often revered as having the most diverse art collection in the southwestern United States. Its most prominent pieces include the styles of Italian Renaissance painting, French Impressionism, and both European and American Decorative Arts.
Revered for its architecture as well as its fine collection of art, the San Antonio Museum of Art is a must-see. It’s located on the River Walk in San Antonio and is home to impressive collections of ancient Mediterranean art, contemporary art, Asian art and Latin American art.
Found in Fort Worth, Kimbell is a small fine art museum designed by Louis Khan. In addition to the artistry of the architecture, you will find a great permanent collection inside with work from prehistoric Asian and pre-Columbian pieces to European old masters, Impressionists, and modern geniuses. There are also some impressive traveling collections.
