When one thinks of Switzerland, a simplistic, warm home among the mountain hills may come to mind. Cows and sheep roam in pastures, which are vibrantly green, contrasting with grey, snow-capped peaks— life’s just simpler. Well, these little huts exist and are just an Airbnb booking and flight away. Often identified as Maiensässes, farmhouses among the mountains, or classic Rustico homes, they make for the most enriching, modernized-historical getaway.

Hutsfeeling on the Maiensäss
Peering down from the mountains toward the village of Rueras, this alpine hut features a Tujetsche soapstone stove complimenting its rustic structure and loft. Outdoor lounging space with natural stone furniture and pops of color from the flowery landscape backs right up to the spacious Maiensässe. Hiking trails are nearby and are particularly inviting during July, which is blueberry picking season.
Mountain Cottage in Val Di Blenio
Vines charmingly creep up the exterior of the renovated stone farmhouse at the base of Adula-Rheinwaldhorn, and breathtaking streams for swimming are a skip away. Winter alpine skiing makes up for missing out on swimming in colder months, and anytime is a good time for a scenic hike.
House in the Alps, 1300 m a/s
Shaded by mature trees and refreshingly simple with no electricity or running water, this hut is primitively charming, not to mention a great break away from it all. Candles light the way at night, and a wood stove is all you need to make simple, delicious meals. Guests must hike to the home—it’s a rewarding part of the adventure.
The name says it all–this is the ultimate place to disconnect from it all, and truly relax. With some modern conveniences like satellite television, you’re not completely shut off from civilization, which some may find important to their vacation.
Rustic Ponte Dei Salti Valle Verzasca
Right beside the Ponte di Salti, is a romantic stone hut perfect for duos. Beautiful mountain pools set below the dramatic bridge arches, and if conditions are right, guests can dive into the dreamy blue waters.
Tiny and traditional, yet with many modern fixtures, this wee little hut in Leontica is surrounded by mountains and plenty of outdoor space for enjoying the surroundings. An unexpected wooden sauna turns this into a luxurious little getaway.
Setting on a mountain hill, this simple, classic Rustico looks like something out of a movie. In district Valle di Blenio of Ticino, it’s quite small, but in a refreshing way–it’s a great escape. Stream line décor inside, like wood accents and a stone fireplace, gives off a cabin cottage feel.
Rare gem, off-grid Swiss mountain rustico
Rare indeed, as this not-so-small hut, also known as the Casa Caro, has maintained a more old-school aesthetic, while many others have been modernized. The water wheel adds a fairytale touch to this amazing location right outside of Vosa, a picturesque mountain village. Hiking and cable car are the transportation methods of choice to get to this place, which is actually really exciting. Other perks are natural swimming pools and an outdoor sleeping terrace!
Enjoy wine and cheese on the terrace, or cook some fresh items from the market, on the outdoor grill. Inside, it’s cozy, but you’ll find yourself wanting to basically live outside while staying at Katono. Pristine mountain lakes Retico, Luzzone, Ritom and Lugano are easily accessible, as well as numerous hiking trails.
Rustico vista mozzafiato
Funky plywood cabinets in the kitchen and arched stone doorways give this place an interesting, but really cool feel. A wooden ladder leads to a snug loft perfect for snuggling, and there are several other great nooks for lounging. Taller than a lot of rusticos, the structure overlooks the Tenero, with clear views of the expansive lake.
Melograno (House) in Selma
Sleek and new on the inside, while the outside is made of logs and stone, this hillside hut sets among other homes in the area. The balcony views are amazing during the summer, spring, fall and winter–it’s a precious spot to enjoy a morning cup of coffee. Valleys situated near the house make the scenery even more dimensional. Perfection.
