Now that fall is finally here, it’s time to celebrate the season by going to a pumpkin patch. But the Aw Shucks! Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch in Monroe is anything but your typical farm. In fact, there’s so much to do here, you may plan to come for an hour but end up staying for the day!
Perhaps the most popular part of the Aw Shucks! Farm is their amazing corn maze that changes themes each year. Whether you visit during the daytime or wander through at night by the light of your flashlight, the maze is fun for people of all ages and usually only takes about 25 minutes to get out.
When you’re done with the maze, there’s still plenty to do on the farm. The little ones will want to check out the play area that includes a treehouse, a fort, slides, a mini hay maze and even a giant chair to climb on! Then, it’s off to the animal barn where they can see goats, pigs, sheep, rabbits, turkeys and horses and may even have the chance to feed them.
For the grown-ups, the on-site Pumpkin Market offers a variety of produce, gourds, Indian corn, pumpkins and other local products for sale. While the old fashioned General Store will take you back in time with old-time candies, toys and unique gift items like goat milk soaps and local honey.
You can keep the nostalgia going by stopping in at the 1950’s Soda Shop and sitting at the counter to enjoy a homemade ice cream sandwich, a frosty milkshake or a soda float. Or if you’re feeling hungry for more than dessert, you’ll want to check out the Good Eats food area, where they serve up all kinds of Southern favorites like hot dogs, corn dogs, double-decker grilled cheese, corn chip pie, Yoohoo and sweet tea.
If you visit Aw Shucks! at nighttime, make sure to call ahead and reserve a bonfire spot for you and your family or friends. They’ll provide everything you need including benches, tables, roasting sticks, s’mores fixins and even an attendant to keep the fire going.
But believe it or not, that’s still not the end of the fun to be had. In the summer, you can take a ride on a paddleboat or hop on a hayride in the fall. Kids can even go mining for gems or have a fishing party.
The farm also hosts an annual Halloween haunt for visitors eight years old and above, called The 13th Acre, where you may just run into a few unexpected guests while wandering through the corn maze.
