From Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas, the Baja California peninsula has long been popular among surfers with its collection of beautiful beaches. It’s filled with fantastic waves, and in many places, you’ll be out there with only a few other humans, especially outside of the busy winter months. When planning your trip, one of the first considerations is where to stay – and the closer to the surf, the better. While you’ll find plenty of luxury rentals, there are some very budget-friendly options that will put you just steps from the sand too.

Located just an hour south of San Diego between Rosarito and Ensenada, you can have your own slice of surfing paradise at this Airbnb. It offers direct private beach access along with stunning ocean and sunset views. A spacious apartment, it sleeps up to six and includes a rooftop terrace with a BBQ and seating area for eight, ideal for alfresco dining or just sipping cocktails as you watch the sun go down. You’ll also have satellite TV with a DVD player, a fully-equipped kitchen and laundry facilities.
The Baja Surf Cabin not only offers a budget-friendly stay, but it’s also just a short walk to several miles of beach. Built in the ’80s by a California native who loved to surf, it’s located in a sleepy neighborhood just 10 to 15 minutes from the town of San Quintin for shopping and dining. In the wintertime, you’re likely to spot whales while riding the waves, and right from the house too as it’s in the perfect spot for watching the humpback and gray whales that pass by. It’s also ideally situated for spectacular sunrises and sunsets. There are two large bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, accommodating up to four, along with a well-stocked kitchen, multiple outdoor showers, beach chairs and umbrellas.

The two-bedroom bungalow accommodates up to four and is part of the Villas de los Cerritos complex. You’ll have access to its swimming pool and hot tub, restaurant and bar. The bungalow has a well-equipped kitchen for making your own meals too. The beach is just a 5-minute walk away and surf, SUP and boogie boards are available to rent.
This three-bedroom apartment is ideally situated for surfing in Cabo. It sits within the Las Olas development which provides 24-hour security and comes with a furnished terrace with a gas grill for cooking out and relaxing with a stunning ocean view. For those who want to surf Baja close to the border, this Airbnb in Rosarito is under a 50-minute drive from San Diego. The highlight is its semi-private beach, shared only by the other guests in the complex. It accommodates up to six guests in three bedrooms, two of which open to the sand. You’ll have a fully-equipped kitchen, Wi-Fi and access to a swimming pool as well. Just a short walk down a path is a restaurant and bar so you’ll never even have to leave unless you really want to.
While it’s just five miles from downtown Todos Santos, this one-bedroom casita for up to four sits only about 200 yards from the popular surfing beach of La Pastora, accessed via a private gate onto the sand. In addition to outstanding surfing, during the winter months, grey whales swim just offshore, while humpbacks breach in the distance with peak time mid-January through February.
