Skiing is one of the best parts of winter once the snow starts falling, and there are so many amazing ski resorts in the U.S. to check out. As many skiers will tell you, this isn’t a cheap hobby, but sometimes the epic sport calls for a splurge and a bit of indulgence.
Where you stay when you go skiing makes a huge difference in your experience. Hotels right along the slopes will cost you, but they maximize your time on your skis and offer a fun community vibe. But if you’re looking to put in some runs on a budget and don’t mind a commute in heavy traffic, you can certainly stay in more distant areas as well.

One of the most luxurious resorts in the U.S., Mirror Lake Inn Resort and Spa has been family-run since the 1930s and offers a lovely way to experience the Lake Placid area of New York. Stay here when you ski at Whiteface Mountain, which is known for its expert skiing runs with 3,430 feet of vertical, shopping, and fine dining. There are many different room and suite options available. The View restaurant offers a AAA Four-Diamond dining experience, while The Cottage Restaurant is great for comfort foods such as soups and sandwiches. There’s also an award-winning spa here that offers day spa packages, a salon, services just for men, and a fitness center.
Lumière with Inspirato is an intimate boutique hotel in the adorable ski town of Telluride that puts luxury and design first. It’s in Mountain Village and has boutique residences with 5-star amenities. Here you’ll enjoy convenient ski-in/ski-out access and plenty of personalized services that’s attentive but not obtrusive. It’s consistently been ranked as one of the top small hotels and top western hotels in the country. Book an après ski massage to soothe your sore muscles after a day on the mountain. There’s also a soaking pool, hot tub, and sauna for this purpose. This hotel is also pet-friendly, so you can bring your dog and enjoy a complimentary dog bed and bowl during your stay.
A popular spa resort in Colorado, Westin Riverfront Resort & Spa at Beaver Creek Mountain is located in the heart of Vail Valley and is an awesome place to stay when you ski at Beaver Creek Mountain. You’ll enjoy direct access to skiing, the 27,000-square-foot Spa Anjali, and Richard Sandoval’s Mexican restaurant called Maya when you stay here. You can store your skis, snowboards, and boots overnight in the hotel’s ski valet and take the Riverfront Express Gondola from right outside the backdoor. This is also a great year-round destination in Colorado because there are lots of hiking, biking, and white water rafting opportunities nearby for the non-snowy months.
Another excellent place to stay when you go skiing in the Lake Placid area is Whiteface Lodge. This is a luxury Adirondack resort that’s just a short drive from the Whitehead Mountain ski slopes. It’s the only Lake Placid all-suite hotel where the suites range from 650 to 3,600 square feet and nestled into the Adirondack preserve. Different packages are available to celebrate rustic romance, spa treatments, and even a babymoon vacation. KANU Dining Room is the premier restaurant venue, but there’s also a casual lounge and an old-fashioned ice cream parlor. This isn’t just a great place to stay during ski season, but also throughout the year to take advantage of the excellent fishing and waterskiing on the world-class lakes and rivers.
St. Regis Aspen Resort is just steps away from the signature slopes of Aspen and features premier amenities for luxury travelers. It features a heated outdoor pool and hot tubs overlooking Aspen Mountain, while modern mountain cuisine can be found at its on-site restaurant Velvet Buck. Sip handcrafted cocktails at Mountain Social, then retreat to one of the luxury rooms, suites or residences. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, winter fly fishing is also popular in this area. The Remède Spa specializes in customized massages, exfoliation, and soothing aromatherapy baths.
Jackson Hole is a premier skiing destination in the U.S., and the Four Seasons here is consistently ranked one of the top places to stay here. When you stay at the Four Seasons, you’ll be surrounded by the breathtaking Grant Teton Mountain Range and amidst a perfect blend of rustic adventure and luxury. Most of the accommodations open to a private terrace or balcony and overlook the famous Teton Village. Hungry skiers can fuel up at Westbank Grill, The Handle Bar, or Ascent Lounge. There’s also a luxurious 11,685-square-foot spa with 16 treatment rooms here.
If you plan to ski in Vermont this winter, one of the best places to stay here is Topnotch at Stowe. A variety of rooms, suites, and even multi-bedroom resort homes are available at Topnotch Resort. This is a great place to stay for foodies because Flannel and The Roost serve up excellent cuisine. The resort is just two miles from Mt. Mansfield and is a perfect place to stay while you go downhill or cross-country skiing. The resort is also welcoming to children, teens, and dogs.
Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch offers ski-in, ski-out access to the Beaver Creek Resort, as well as mountainside dining and a great spa. There’s an on-site restaurant serving Japanese cuisine and another with a menu of Colorado mountain fare, while the spa features holistic treatments inspired by nature. The look is reminiscent of the iconic mountain lodges of the American West, and there’s over 26,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor function space with beautiful views of Vail Valley.
Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley is a five-star Park City hotel that offers suites, bedrooms, condos, and full homes.
