Located in the Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina, Elk River Falls is one of the most impressive and majestic waterfalls in the area. In fact, this waterfall that is conveniently located near the popular tourist towns, Beech Mountain and Banner Elk, used to be called “Big Falls” and is still identified as such on many topographic maps of the area.
Measuring a striking 50 feet in height, this waterfall cascades brilliantly over a large rock cliff and funnels into a large, oval-sized pool at its base. Because of that, this area is a popular spot for swimming and wading, as well as sunbathing and relaxing along the rocks.
The falls are accessible by an easy 5-minute hike that will bring you out on top of the falls. From there, you can enjoy the beautiful view and watch the water cascade down over the rocks. However, be mindful of where you step because the rocks can become slippery and do not attempt to jump from the cliff or swim underneath the falls. There have been several deaths in the area, so stay safe and enjoy the view!
If you do want to enjoy the natural swimming pool at the base and catch some rays sitting out on the rocks, you can take the trail down a steep but passable descent that will take you down to the bottom. At the base, there are several large, flat boulders that make perfect spots for both sunbathing and picnicking.
This picturesque spot is free to enjoy and is usually quiet and relaxing, although it can get a little crowded on the weekends during the summer months, so be sure to plan accordingly.
