Weston, Vermont is a town seemingly stuck in simpler times—buildings and roads have remained impeccably restored and horses and buggies trot down the streets. During the winter, visitors can take a cozy sleigh ride through the snow. Also residing here is the Vermont Country Store, which may be more famed worldwide for its adorable online merchandise. However, the century-old physical store still exists, and every tiny detail has been kept intact by each generation of family owners. Fitting for a stop during a road trip through Vermont’s top destinations, it’s a great place for travelers to connect with the past.

Upon entering the charming red structure, guests are greeted with trinkets, simple toys and snacks that transport them back to childhood, and the good old days some of us weren’t fortunate enough to be around for. Ice cube chocolates, root beer barrel hard candy, black licorice caramels and satellite wafers are some of the age-old favorites that can hardly be found on the average grocery store shelves these days. International goodies like Belgian wine filled chocolate bottles, Dutch coffee candy and champagne truffles add another level of awesomeness to the astounding candy selection.

Samples, samples, samples—that’s the motto here. Vermont Country Store is notorious for generously offering free tastes of their decadent copper kettle made fudge. Popular flavors include chocolate, chocolate walnut, maple walnut, and penuche, which are made from a hundred-year-old New England recipe of sweet cream, butter and natural flavors, of course. Local cheeses are also up for sampling, and the Vermont cheddar and white pepper shallot cheddar make for excellent additions to a charcuterie board. Summer sausage, Parmesan crisps, cured pepperoni and cracker tins are among the other savory selections.

Stopping by the store can either be something quick you do while passing through or can be made into a full day of exploration. Enjoy a farm to table meal at The Bryant House, where true New England fare is served—fish and chips, yankee pot roast and clam chowder are among popular dishes. Mildred’s Dairy Bar serves up dreamy creamy cones of maple ice cream. There are also some historic things to discover, like an 1800s ballroom and an antique soda fountain.
