Autumn brings out a splendor of colors in Sedona, Arizona, as the yellow and orange hues add pops of color amidst the towering red rocks. A great way to see some of this splendid autumn glory is aboard The Verde Canyon Railroad, a vintage train ride near Sedona that takes you through a part of red rock country that still remains unspoiled and untouched.

The Verde Canyon Railroad travels north along the Verde River, from Clarkdale to Perksinville and back, for a 4-hour, 40-mile trip through one of the most exquisite canyons in Arizona. The train runs year round, but during fall the canyon’s riverside forests shine with vibrant golden foliage.

Verde Canyon is only accessible by train and features an abundance of natural flora and fauna. As the train winds along the rippling waters of the Verde river, it will travel through red rock formations, canopies of foliage and a 680-foot man-made tunnel. Toward the end of the fall season, passengers will likely spot Bald Eagles that migrate to the area for a winter nesting season.

Known as Arizona’s longest-running nature show, The Verde Canyon Railroad is a truly historic journey through one of the most incredible areas of Arizona. The train has operated in the area since 1912 and has offered passengers a glimpse into this pristine wilderness since 1990. Today, the train’s FP7 locomotives are two of only 10 remaining in North America.

The best time for leaf peeping is October through November, with ideal temperatures and the foliage growing more golden as November approaches. Passengers can choose to enjoy the breathtaking scenery from luxurious coaches or open-air viewing cars. And the fall fun continues on board the train seasonal specialties crafted by the bartenders to keep the journey festive.
