The freedom to get in the car and just go is a dream for many of us who are kept busy with 9-5’s or hectic school schedules. When a free moment does occur, it’s nice to know that you don’t have to go too far to feel the wind at your back, sun in your face, and the excitement of approaching another world to be explored by simply going a few towns over. Texas is full of exciting travel destinations, but these small towns are worth a stop on your next road trip adventure in the Lone Star State.
Bandera
One of the most charming small towns in Texas, Bandera is cowboy country and the place for hole-in-the-wall dining experiences, tours on horseback and historical sites like Bandera General Store, home of resident ghost Henry. Bandera Brewery is a standout in the craft beer scene.
Marfa
From the famous, or infamous, Prada Marfa to the vast desert, mysterious lights, and other visual art and music showcases, this little town has both nothing and everything. The contemporary art space known as Ballroom Marfa allows visitors to view and experience art through performances, music, visual art, and more, all for free. Come out for Trans-Pecos Festival of Music + Love to get a real understanding of Marfa’s identity and culture.
Mason County
Blue topaz, the Texas state gem, is only found here in Mason County. With no commercial mining, individuals like you and me are left with quite a bit of it to sift around for. Local ranchers have been known to lend the necessary equipment.
Medina Valley
Medina Valley’s Medina River flows from South Central Texas to Bexar County in San Antonio. Somehow it has managed to draw kayakers instead of tubers, which is the fate of most other Texas rivers. Come here for quiet contemplation and woodland scenery.
Amarillo
Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo is a must-do road trip destination; no question! Set up in ’74 by art collective Ant Farm, Cadillac Ranch is a stunning desert dotted with man-made creativity that brings visitors on a regular basis. If quirky art installations don’t appeal to you, head downtown to one of the city’s many museums.
Glen Rose
At Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, you can see authentic dinosaur footprints, kayak, fish, and much more. It’s simply an interesting place that shouldn’t be overlooked.
Grand Prairie
Small town charm in Dallas County! From the Palace of Wax to skate parks, local farmers’ markets, and ample opportunity for picnics by the lake, Grand Prairie is the small Texas town you never knew you needed to visit. It’s also home to Lone Star Park, a famous horse racing track and entertainment destination.
