Air tours have been rated as the No. 1 activity on the island for the past three decades. Only about 10% of the island can be seen by car, but a fly-over allows visitors to truly experience all that this slice of paradise truly has to offer.
The flight includes just about all of Kauai’s highlights, including the legendary Na Pali coast, which can’t be accessed by a motor vehicle. Lying on the north shore of the island, it’s frequently named as one of the most breathtaking places on the entire planet with its lush green pinnacles rising along the shoreline for 17 miles, while waterfalls cascade into its narrow valleys.
Other highlights include Lumahia Beach where the movie “South Pacific” was filmed, Hanalei Valley, countless waterfalls, Kilauea Lighthouse and spectacular Waimea Canyon, along with miles and miles of jaw-dropping coastline.
You’ll even fly over famous Wailua Falls, a double-tied waterfall that was thrust into the spotlight after being featured in the opening of the “Fantasy Island” TV series. The over 80-foot-high falls plunge into an deep pool at the bottom. While you can view it up close, seeing it from above is even more impressive.
If you visit during the wintertime, you’re likely to spot at least one of the many humpbacks in the waters that surround the island. And, if you’re really lucky, you may even see them leap right of the sea. The view from above is unlike anything you’d get from the shore.
Flying through the mist and clouds that often envelope the mountain peaks, is a rather surreal experience as well.
Tours are taken in comfortable, air-conditioned GA-8 AirVan aircraft, which hold a maximum of six passengers per flight. Each and every person gets a guaranteed window seat.
As the planes were designed to fly at slow speeds, they can circle the entire island during the 70-minute tour so passengers get to see all of the island highlights. You’ll also learn quite a bit about what you’re seeing from the knowledgeable, entertaining pilot.
There’s no doubt that this is an experience of a lifetime that really shouldn’t be missed during your visit to Kauai.
