Georgetown, Texas is known as the “Red Poppy Capital of Texas.” The red poppy flower graces the Georgetown landscape every spring. A remarkable aspect of the red poppies of Georgetown is that the flowers actually reseed themselves every year, something that only occurs in a few places in the United States. The red poppy was first introduced to Georgetown over 70 years ago when Henry Purl “Okra” Compton brought the seeds back with him after serving as a corporal in the U.S. Army in World War I. He gave the seeds to his mother, who then planted them outside of her Georgetown home. With the help of local birds, bees, and the community, the poppies spread all over town and continue to thrive here to this day.
In celebration of the red poppy bloom that happens every spring, Georgetown throws the annual Red Poppy Festival. With the festival rescheduled in the fall season, Popptoberfest is a unique occurrence that is worth the drive from Austin. This family-friendly event is free to the public. Some parts of the festival, such as the 5K run and parade, have been rescheduled for April 2022. However, the main events of the weekend will still occur, like the concerts and artisan shopping booths.
Popptoberfest kicks off on Friday, October 1st at 6 p.m. This weekend-long event will last until 5 p.m. on Sunday. The festival will take over the small town of Georgetown and the city’s famous square, known as the “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas.” With three live music stages, a car show, a kid zone area, local artisan vendors, and plenty of festival food options, Popptoberfest is sure to be an iconic fall festival for local Texans and tourists alike.
