Located near the outdoor attractions in Page, Arizona, Horseshoe Bend is an iconic natural landscape in Arizona where the Colorado River meanders around in a horseshoe shape. It’s located within the Glen Canyon Recreation Area, which means that there is plenty to see and do nearby even after you’ve walked along the steep trail and snapped a hundred or so photos of the amazing views all around you. Fortunately, there are some great places to camp in the Horseshoe Bend area so that you can take all the time you like to explore the outdoors and soak up the scenery.
The National Park Service operates three campgrounds in this area, and none of them take advance reservations. Lees Ferry Campground has 54 sites and an RV dump station, but no hookups. At this campground, you’ll find modern bathrooms, potable water, grills to cook out, and a boat launch about two miles away.
You can also camp at the Lone Rock Beach primitive camping area in the dunes or right on the sandy beach. There are no designated campsites here, so just pick an area you like and pay a small fee per vehicle to park here. On-site you’ll find micro-flush toilets, vault toilets, an outdoor cold shower, and seasonal potable water. NPS also operates the Stanton Creek, Hite, Farley, and Dirty Devil primitive camping areas on the beaches here for a fee.
Meanwhile, the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area’s park concessioner operates the Waheap developed camping area, which has 112 dry campsites, 90 full hookup sites and six group campsites. The concessioner also operates the Bullfrog developed camping area’s 78 campsites and the Halls Crossing developed camping area with 43 campsites and two group sites nearby.
But if you’re looking for more amenities, such as free Wi-Fi, an indoor pool, Jacuzzi, laundry facilities, fitness room, and convenience store, consider booking a site at the Page Lake Powell Campground. This RV park-style campground is about four miles from Horseshoe Bend and offers tent sites and RV sites.
Alternatively, if you’re willing to rough it a bit, you can camp in the undeveloped areas along the Lake Powell shoreline for free. You’ll need a four-wheel drive vehicle or boat to access these areas, but then you can camp anywhere along the shore beside the developed marinas. It definitely helps to have a map of the area to help you figure out where you’re going along the shore and where to pitch your tent.
Camping in the Horseshoe Bend area is an awesome way to get to know Northern Arizona and explore the nearby hiking areas at your own pace. So, pack up your tent or fuel up your RV, because it’s camping season!
