Go Underground at the 6 Best Caverns in Virginia

Virginia is full of natural wonders, but did you know there’s another world to explore in the mountains? We’re not talking about the views from the top either. In fact, we’re talking about the world that exists underneath the ground. Virginia is home to some of the most impressive, expansive caverns in the whole country and they are a great place to explore year-round, since the temperature inside them stays in the mid-50’s, no matter what the season.

Luray Caverns, Luray

If you’ve heard of any caverns in Virginia, you’ve probably heard of Luray Caverns. Not only are they the largest caverns in the eastern United States, but they are also considered a national landmark. Everywhere you look here, you’ll see breathtaking clusters of stalactites hanging down from the ceiling of the caves and stalagmites growing up from the floor. One of the most impressive features at Luray – Empress Column – was formed when a stalactite and a stalagmite grew together to form one giant golden column. Other points of interest here include a lit green pond known as the “Wishing Well,” the Giant Hall – a vast open area that is ten stories tall and filled with golden columns, and the Stalacpipe Organ – the world’s largest music instrument which uses stalactites as the organ pipes!
