One of the most beautiful destinations in the Florida Keys, Bahia Honda State Park is the ultimate island paradise. Not only does the 500-acre park feature the postcard-worthy landscapes you’d expect from a Florida getaway, like palm-lined beaches and crystal-clear waters, but it’s also one of the best places in the Sunshine State for snorkeling.
Outdoor adventures are endless at this family-friendly spot. You can hop in a kayak and paddle the waters, rent snorkel gear and dive underwater to explore its underwater treasures, or simply lounge on the soft sands. Water-loving visitors can also sign up for boat trips to the reef to get up close with the area’s most spectacular natural wonders.
Stroll across Bahia Honda Bridge trail for stunning views of the water, then head to the award-winning beaches for a laid-back day of swimming, snorkeling, or fishing. Calusa Beach offers views of the old Bahia Honda Bridge and Overseas Highway and is an ideal spot for swimming and snorkeling, while Loggerhead Beach is the longest beach with more room to stretch out and a popular launching point for kayaking and fishing. Birdwatchers will love observing the colorful selection of wading birds and shorebirds in their natural habitat.
If you want to explore more, the Park Concession operates daily snorkeling tours to the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Here you’ll find one of the most incredible reefs in the Florida Keys, featuring Elkhorn and massive Star coral. However, snorkeling right off the beach at Bahia Honda is also popular, with rental gear available at the park. It’s possible to spot spiny lobster, starfish, and queen conch while floating on the aquamarine waters.
Looking for an overnight adventure? Spend a starry night in this majestic destination at one of the on-site tent or RV campsites. Bahia Honda is actually the darkest location for stargazing in the Florida Keys.
To reach Bahia Honda, you’ll drive about 20 minutes past Marathon in the Florida Keys, right before Big Pine Key. It’s directly after the 7 mile bridge at Mile Marker 37. (Mile markers are a popular way to find attractions in the Florida Keys)
