Arizona’s Jerome Grand Hotel is a Mecca for Paranormal Adventures

Hotel guests who are afraid of chilling paranormal activity should probably miss their check-in time at the Jerome Grand Hotel in Arizona, as it is believed that nearly 9,000 people died during its previous life as United Verde Hospital in the 1920s and is said to be haunted to this day.

Widely considered the most haunted place in Arizona, the Jerome Grand Hotel is also the largest National Historic Landmark building in Jerome, where the five-floor hotel sits majestically one mile high above the entire Verde Valley.

A mecca for ghost-hunting enthusiasts, its biggest claim to fame is its spooky guests that regularly roam the halls, where ghostly figures, sounds and unexplained orbs of light and other paranormal activity are a common occurrence. Like straight out of a horror movie, a long list of first-hand videos and pictures give insight into what previous guests have experienced at this hotel.

Jerome is a former mining town, where the hotel served as a medical facility for the miners and also treated locals that fell ill with a deadly flu. The hospital closed in 1950, but a common report with guests today is that they can hear visitors wailing and heavy breathing, with many of the voices believed to be spirits of past patients.

While activity happens throughout the property, it’s the third floor that receives the most attention. Guests here have reported hearing voices and the wheels of a hospital gurney in the hallways. When they went out to inspect the commotion, they discovered that no one there. It’s said that this floor was an operating room in the hospital, with Room 32 serving as a particular hotspot for activity due to two possible suicides occurring in it.

The creepy stories don’t end there though, as a former maintenance man, named Claude Harvey, was found in the basement crushed by the elevator in 1935 even though it was working perfectly, and he is said to ride the elevator at all hours. The list goes on, from voices coming from empty rooms to the smell of cigar smoke and whiskey and reports of a small child wandering its halls.

The hotel plays host to hair-raising ghost hunting tours, where you can explore the supernatural and paranormal activities as a part of a ghost hunting team. You’ll be given an EMT meter, IR thermometer, and digital camera to document everything you encounter, and the hotel will put the photos on a CD as a souvenir to take home. When you work up an appetite, make sure to head to the aptly named Asylum Restaurant for a hearty lunch or dinner on site.
