A nature lovers paradise, Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine boasts 1,600 acres of rich ecosystems filled with diverse wildlife. In addition to its four miles of pristine coastline, the park boasts an estuarine tidal marsh that is teeming with lush flora and fauna, while a scenic nature trail winds through the maritime hammock and leads you to its picturesque landscape of sand dunes.

You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to outdoor activities at Anastasia State Park, as Florida’s sunny weather makes it a perfect setting for sunbathing, beachcombing, swimming and fishing. Those looking for water sports action will find that as well, as surfing, paddle boarding and kayaking are also popular. If you want to leisurely explore the area, rent a bike and cruise along the shoreline on two wheels or hop in a kayak and see the estuarine tidal marsh along Salt Run.

It will be hard to peel yourself away from the park’s impressive, white sandy beaches, but if you want to admire the colorful variety of birds, turtles and other wildlife it is best to take a peaceful stroll along the trails. The estuarine tidal marsh is filled with animal life, such as dolphins, manatees, sea turtles, fish, crabs and marsh birds. For some of the best wildlife watching opportunities, head to the Windsurf picnic pavilion area, the beach boardwalk and the beach overlook.

Interested in the area’s history? Learn more about Florida’s past by visiting the Coquina Quarry, which is an archaeological site that dates back to the 1700s. It was where coquina rock was mined to help construct the nearby Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, which earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Looking for an overnight adventure? Spend the night under the stars at one of the 139 campsites that are nestled in the beautiful maritime hammock, located just a short walk from the spectacular coastline. Wake up to the sound of crashing waves and watch the sunrise, then stroll the quiet beach for colorful seashell treasures that have washed up ashore.

You’ll find opportunities in the park to rent bikes, paddle boards, kayaks and canoes, and if you’re a beginner you can also sign up for lessons. When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to Island Joe’s Tropical Grill and Beach Store to sit under the pavilion on the beach with a selection of fresh seafood fare. There is also a grill area and small gift shop to pick up Anastasia souvenirs, in addition to three accessible kids playgrounds.
