7 Exquisite Accommodations in Georgia’s Golden Isles

Did you know that there are islands off the coast of the state of Georgia? Most travelers to the American Southeast get wrapped up in Atlanta and the Carolinas, but there are some really unique island trips to take right off Georgia’s Atlantic Coast.

The area is about a five-hour drive from Atlanta, and these conveniently situated islands run the gamut of secluded, touristy, peaceful, and lively. Some are accessible by bridge, and others only by a ferry that runs a couple times per day. Midway between Savannah and Jacksonville, the Golden Isles are full of fascinating history and southern culture.

Depending on which island you choose, there are hotels, bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals, beach houses, and campsites available for weekend getaways or long-term stays. To plan your trip, these are some of the top places to stay in Georgia’s islands any time of the year.

Greyfield Inn, Cumberland Island

Cumberland Island is a remote and beautiful destination that is home to a spectacular natural wildlife habitat. It is the largest and southernmost island known for undeveloped beaches, maritime forests, and marshes. Many people choose to boat or kayak to the island and then set up camp; however, you can also stay at the Greyfield Inn, a historic mansion, for a more luxurious stay. This mansion dates back to the 19th century when Thomas and Lucy Carnegie built it for their daughter. It was converted into an inn in the early 1960s, but still retains the family’s southern charm. Included in your rate is a Southern breakfast, picnic lunch, gourmet dinner, bicycles, tours, and ferry transportation.

The Retreat on Sapelo, Sapelo Island

Sapelo Island is unlike any other of Georgia’s Golden Islands. It is only accessible by ferry and offers a truly remote setting with very minimal services. A VRBO apartment rental property called The Retreat on Sapelo is operated by husband/wife hosts, and it’s a perfect place to get away from it all. The beaches are very rarely crowded, and the hosts loan guests a spare SUV vehicle and bicycles to explore the island. Inside the attic apartment, you’ll find a queen-size bed, two bunk beds, a futon, a full kitchen, with an outdoor deck. Less than 100 people live on the island, and you’ll need to bring your own food and drinks to stock the fridge because there’s only one tiny convenience store with sporadic hours. The apartment is stocked with fascinating local books about the island’s history related to slavery and the Civil War.
